The Rat Lady's Rescue Rats

I’ve decided to blog about my adventures in becoming a new rat mom in hopes of helping and sharing the joy of being a pet rat caregiver.

It all began with my first rescue of all – Sir Francis.

I was thinking of getting a pet after settling into a new place and it was between a bird or a rodent. I looked at the Humane Society in my area and noticed a male rat who had been listed for several months. He looked so distinguished and I felt so bad that such a smart and curious creature was stuck in a shelter for so long. Of course, the volunteers were amazing with helping to give him free roam, treats, and enrichment.

After a phone consultation and a sweet meet ‘n greet where he was curious but shy, I decided my home would be forever his. :)

I didn’t know a lot about owning pet rats, but after bringing him home I wanted to give him the best life possible, so it’s been hours of research about pet rats and everything they need to be healthy and happy.

I want to share my learning experiences, joy, and helpful tips with new and experienced rat owners and I’m open to tips and advice since I am still a new rat parent.

Some members of any community can become rude when correcting another person online or when they disagree with something that someone is doing. I want this space to be a judgment-free zone. No one knows everything and it’s OK if you’ve made mistakes as a rat owner – as long as you’re open to continuous learning and helpful tips from more experienced rat owners.
